Selecting the 'Best' Carbon monoxide detector for your dwelling
We recommend carbon monoxide detectors with either a digital read out (see pictures above) or audio announcement. These models, when sounding an alert, also visually inform you of the following:
- A brief repetitive chirping sound and the letters "Lb" mean that the detector needs a new battery. Replace the battery and reinstall.
- When the detector is chirping repetitively, but not to loudly, and displaying "Err"or code, it generally means that the detectors life span and warranty have expired. It is time for a new detector.
- If the detectors alert is a loud quick repetitive sound with a number displayed on the readout, it is sensing carbon monoxide (CO) and you will need to get all people and pets out of the house, and call 911.
There are several reliable brands of carbon monoxide detectors on the market. While we recommend First Alert because of its vast options and quality products, there are several other brands worth looking at, as well. Kidde is a highly rated and reliable product, as well as the new options in complete home security systems that include CO Detectors as a service. Whatever brand you choose, we highly recommend making sure it has a digital readout, an internal (never need to replace)10 year battery life and warranty to match.
You can purchase a quality carbon monoxide detector at any local hardware store, hardware section of most chain department stores and online. Ensure that wherever you purchase a CO detector from it has a return policy and honors the warranty of the product.
