Installing your carbon monoxide detector correctly

Back to CO Detector Information

Correct Installation of Your Carbon Monoxide Detector

EPA Recommendations
  • Because carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air and also because it may be found with warm, rising air, detectors should be placed on a wall about 5 feet above the floor.
  • Do not place the detector right next to the gas furnace, gas hot water heater, over a fireplace or any other flame-producing appliance.
  • Attempt to place the detectors 10 to 15 feet away from garages, and fuel burning appliances.
  • Each floor needs a separate detector.
  • If you are getting a single carbon monoxide detector, place it near the sleeping area and make certain the alarm is loud enough to wake you up.
  • If you have a removable battery powered CO detector, make sure to change the battery out at least once a year on the same occasion. For example, day light savings when you change your clocks.
  • Make sure your electric CO detectors also have a battery backup in case the power goes out.
